What is Loratadine?
Loratadine is an antihistamine that is commonly used to relieve symptoms of allergies. It is included in a class of drugs known as long-acting antihistamines.
Mechanism of Action:
Loratadine works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that initiates allergic symptoms. When you are exposed to an allergen, your body releases histamine, which binds to certain cells and causes them to swell and leak fluid. This leads to common allergic reactions like runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing. Loratadine blocks histamine, thus preventing these symptoms.
Common Uses:
Allergic Rhinitis: It helps manage symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itching caused by hay fever and other allergies.
Chronic Urticaria: Loratadine is used to relieve the itchiness associated with a chronic (long-lasting) hives and other skin rash.
Dosage Instructions:
Adults and children over 6 years typically take a 10 mg tablet once a day.
It’s non-drowsy when taken as directed. It’s imperative that this medication is taken as per the guidelines prescribed by the healthcare provider or the manual.
