Mechanism of Action
Azeptin Tab, Azelastine is an antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Azelastine is a selective H1-receptor antagonist, which means it specifically inhibits the H1 histamine receptors, reducing symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and runny nose.
Common Uses
Azelastine is commonly prescribed for:
Allergic Rhinitis: To relieve symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes caused by seasonal or perennial allergies.
Non-Allergic Rhinitis: To manage symptoms of nasal congestion, runny nose, and postnasal drip not caused by allergies.
Allergic Conjunctivitis: To relieve itchy, red, and watery eyes due to allergies.
Dosage Instructions
Azelastine is available in nasal spray and ophthalmic (eye drop) forms. The dosage and administration guidelines are as follows:
Nasal Spray:
Dosage: For adults and children 12 years and older, the typical dose is one or two sprays in each nostril twice daily.
Administration: Shake the bottle gently before use, insert the spray tip into the nostril, and spray while inhaling gently.
Ophthalmic Drops:
Dosage: For adults and children 3 years and older, the usual dose is one drop in each affected eye twice daily.
Administration: Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and apply one drop into the pocket of the lower eyelid. Close your eyes and press the corner of your eye for a minute to prevent the medication from draining out.
Benefits
Rapid Relief: Azelastine provides quick relief from allergy symptoms, often within minutes of administration.
Non-Sedative: Unlike some antihistamines, azelastine does not typically cause drowsiness, making it suitable for daytime use.
Versatile Forms: Available as a nasal spray and eye drops, it can be used to treat both nasal and eye allergy symptoms effectively.
Potential Side Effects
While azelastine is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects. Common side effects include:
Nasal Spray: Bitter taste, nasal irritation, dry mouth, sneezing.
Ophthalmic Drops: Temporary stinging or burning in the eyes, headache, bitter taste.
Serious Side Effects: Though rare, serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. If these occur, seek medical attention immediately.
Conclusion
Azelastine is a valuable medication for managing allergy symptoms, providing rapid and effective relief without causing significant drowsiness. Its availability in both nasal spray and eye drop forms makes it versatile and convenient for treating various allergic conditions. However, it is important to use azelastine under medical supervision and adhere to prescribed dosages to minimize potential side effects and ensure the best outcomes. Regular check-ups and communication with your healthcare provider can help manage any risks and optimize treatment.
