1. Mechanism of Action:
Olmesartan(Olmetec) belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB). Its primary action is to block the effects of a substance called angiotensin II in the body. Angiotensin II narrows the blood vessels and releases hormones that raise blood pressure. By blocking its effect, olmesartan helps relax and widen blood vessels, leading to a reduction in blood pressure.
2. Dosage Instructions:
Starting dose: For adults, the usual recommended starting dose is 20mg once daily.
Maintenance dose: Depending on the blood pressure response, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 40mg daily.
Always take the medication as prescribed by your doctor and regularly monitor your blood pressure.
3. Common Uses:
Olmesartan is primarily used to:
Treat high blood pressure (hypertension).
Reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and an enlarged heart.
Improve survival in patients with heart failure.
4. Benefits:
Effective in lowering blood pressure, which reduces the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular events.
Often well-tolerated with a lower side effect profile compared to some other blood pressure medications.
Can be combined with other antihypertensive agents for enhanced blood pressure control.
5. Potential Side Effects:
Like all medications, olmesartan has potential side effects. These can include:
Dizziness or lightheadedness.
Kidney problems.
High blood potassium levels.
Low blood pressure.
Rarely, olmesartan can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if taken during the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
Always communicate with your healthcare provider about any unusual or bothersome side effects.
