Lasix, Furosemide, commonly known by its brand name Lasix, is a powerful diuretic medication used to reduce fluid retention and swelling caused by various medical conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney dysfunction. It belongs to the class of drugs known as loop diuretics, which work by preventing your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine.

Mechanism of Action
Furosemide acts on the ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidneys, inhibiting the sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter. This action leads to an increase in the excretion of water, sodium, chloride, and potassium, effectively reducing fluid accumulation in the body.

Common Uses
Edema: Treatment of swelling caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or kidney disease.
Hypertension: Used as an adjunctive therapy for high blood pressure, helping to lower it.

Dosage Instructions
Furosemide is available in tablet and liquid form and is typically taken once or twice daily. The dosage varies depending on the condition being treated, starting from 20 mg to 80 mg for adults. For chronic conditions, it might be part of a daily regimen, while for acute conditions, it may be used on an as-needed basis. Always follow your healthcare provider's recommendations for dosage and frequency.

Benefits
Effectively reduces fluid retention and swelling.
Can help manage blood pressure in conjunction with other medications.
Quick onset of action provides rapid relief from symptoms.

Potential Side Effects
While furosemide is effective, it can have potential side effects, including:

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
Low blood pressure.
