Levowell, Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This action causes the death of bacteria and helps to clear infections.
Mechanism of Action
Levofloxacin targets and inhibits the action of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, leading to a cessation of bacterial DNA processes and ultimately the death of the bacterial cell. This makes it effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Common Uses
Respiratory infections: Such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis exacerbations, and acute sinusitis.
Skin infections: Including complicated skin and soft tissue infections.
Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Including pyelonephritis and cystitis.
Prostatitis: Treatment of bacterial prostatitis.
Other infections: It may also be used to treat certain gastrointestinal infections and in the prevention of anthrax exposure.
Dosage Instructions
Levofloxacin is typically taken once daily, with or without food. The dose and duration of treatment depend on the type and severity of the infection being treated. Common doses range from 250 mg to 750 mg daily for 5 to 14 days. Always follow the dosage and treatment plan prescribed by your healthcare provider.
