Lixiana tab, Edoxaban is an oral anticoagulant that belongs to the class of medications known as direct factor Xa inhibitors. It is used primarily to prevent blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation (not caused by a heart valve problem) and to treat and prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
Mechanism of Action
Edoxaban works by selectively inhibiting Factor Xa, an important component in the blood clotting cascade. By blocking this factor, edoxaban prevents the formation of thrombin and ultimately fibrin, which are crucial components of blood clots. This mechanism helps to reduce the risk of clot formation without the need for routine monitoring, which is often required with other types of anticoagulants like warfarin.
Common Uses
Prevention of Stroke and Systemic Embolism in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation: Reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients who have atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem.
Treatment and Prevention of DVT and PE: Used to treat existing deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and to prevent them from reoccurring.
Dosage Instructions
The standard dosage of edoxaban is relatively straightforward:
For Atrial Fibrillation: The recommended dose is usually 60 mg taken once daily, but it may be reduced to 30 mg daily depending on kidney function, body weight, or if certain other medications are being taken.
For DVT and PE Treatment: The recommended dose is 60 mg once daily after initial treatment with an injectable anticoagulant for 5 to 10 days. A reduced dose of 30 mg once daily may be recommended under similar conditions as above.
Patients should follow their healthcare provider's instructions carefully and ensure they understand how to manage the dose adjustments in various situations.
Benefits
Provides effective anticoagulation with a single daily dose.
Reduced risk of major bleeding compared to some other anticoagulants.
No routine blood monitoring is needed, unlike with warfarin.
Potential Side Effects
While edoxaban is an effective anticoagulant, it can have side effects, including:
Increased risk of bleeding, including major bleeding events.
Anemia.
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, or minor gastrointestinal bleeding.
Rarely, liver enzyme elevations.
